Google Maps Renames the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America

If you search Google Maps for the Gulf of Mexico from Trinidad and Tobago, you will notice a change! The name “Gulf of America” now appears in parentheses next to “Gulf of Mexico.” However, if you are in the United States, you will see it as the Gulf of America, while users in Mexico will still see the traditional Gulf of Mexico. This change comes after the U.S. government updated its official maps, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump. Google explained that it adjusts map names based on official government sources. This is not the first time Google has made location name changes, as seen with the Persian Gulf/Arabian Gulf naming difference depending on location. In the U.S., Trump even declared February 9th as “Gulf of America Day” during a flight over the Gulf.
