Gcat Drives Tobago Development

January 26, 2026 — The General Contractors Association of Tobago (GCAT) has successfully hosted its first general meeting, reaffirming its commitment to advocating for Tobago’s contractors and the local construction sector. The meeting, which follows the association’s soft launch earlier this month, provided a platform for local builders to unite under a single, apolitical voice.

Interim President Patrick Parks addressed members, emphasizing that GCAT was formed to bridge the gap between private contractors and the Tobago House of Assembly (THA). A primary focus of the discussion was the persistent issue of outstanding payments, with Parks vowing that the association will act as a robust advocate to ensure contractors are paid on time for completed works.

Vice President Darren McLetchie highlighted the association’s broader goals, which include:

• Capacity Building: Developing services to help members improve human resource management and technical standards.
• Equity in Opportunity: Ensuring that local contractors are given a fair chance at securing government-funded projects.
• Collaboration: Forging professional alliances to strengthen the island’s construction industry.

As the largest employer in Tobago outside of the public service, the construction sector is a vital engine for economic growth. GCAT leaders stressed that their goal is to work collaboratively with the current administration to foster a more resilient and professional building environment. The association is expected to hold its official, full-scale launch in approximately three months.
