St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres recently described the G-20 Framework as a “merry-go-round” in his discussion of the significant challenges Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face in accessing crucial climate financing.
His remarks were made during a plenary session at the 4th International Small Island Developing States Conference, held in Antigua and Barbuda. Guterres’s characterization highlights the perceived complexities and inefficiencies within the current global financial architecture that hinder SIDS from securing the necessary funds to combat the impacts of climate change, despite their extreme vulnerability. The UN Secretary-General’s comments underscore the urgent need for reform in how climate finance is disbursed to these nations.
