Don’t Fall For It: TTPS Warns on Social Media Investment Scams Costing Millions
July 22, 2025 – A stark warning tonight from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS): be wary of investment scams blowing up on your social media feeds. Authorities are flagging a surge in fraudulent schemes, promising big money, fast, that have already cost citizens millions.
One such deceptive advertisement used a fake endorsement from Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo, falsely claiming a one-hundred-dollar investment could balloon to thousands in just 48 hours. The TTPS’s White Collar Crime Division says this is a classic bait-and-switch tactic. Financial watchdogs have observed a significant spike in these online pyramid schemes, which often operate through encrypted chats on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. This urgent advisory underscores the critical need for vigilance against financial fraud in Trinidad and Tobago.
