On January 30th, 2025, Trinidad and Tobago’s first female Commissioner of Police, Earla Harewood Christopher, was arrested in connection with the importation of illegal firearms. However, the charges were later dismissed, and she was officially relieved of her duties as Commissioner of Police on January 31st. While the lack of substantial evidence led to the dismissal of the charges against Christopher, the question of who will assume the role of the next Commissioner of Police remains unresolved. During today’s Police Press Briefing, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Junior Benjamin, confirmed that investigations are still ongoing.
