Controversial clause withdrawn

AG Reginald Armour SC announces removal of $25,000 pension grant eligibility clause.

Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – Attorney General Reginald Armour has announced his decision to withdraw the Miscellaneous Provisions (Senior Citizens’ Pension and Public Assistance) Bill, 2024.

The bill, which sparked controversy, proposed to disqualify individuals with bank savings exceeding $25,000 from receiving the old age pension. During a media conference on Wednesday afternoon, AG Armour clarified that the inclusion of savings as a condition was never intended to be a part of the legislation. His decision aims to address public concern and misinformation surrounding the proposed changes to the pension system.
