Scarborough, Tobago – June 19, 2024 – The February 7th oil spill has been largely cleaned up along the coastlines of the affected areas in Tobago. The current focus is now on the complex task of extracting the hydrocarbon-like substance from the Gulfstream vessel itself. However, this process has proven to be difficult at times due to challenging weather conditions and rough seas.
Last week, the Office of the Chief Secretary reported that new hydrocarbon deposits were seen near Cove, believed to have escaped from the vessel. Allan Stewart, Director of the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), appeared on the Tobago Updates Morning Show today (June 18, 2024), sharing how this situation was handled. His update highlighted the ongoing efforts and logistical challenges in completing the oil recovery from the Gulfstream wreck and preventing further contamination of Tobago’s marine environment.
