Constitutional Gimmick: Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar Rejects PM Rowley’s Collaboration Invitation

Opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar labels the central government’s attempt at constitutional reform as a gimmick.

August 23, 2024 – Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has indicated that it would take approximately six months to implement some of the changes proposed by the constitutional reform committee and has expressed a desire to decide on the way forward with the Opposition. However, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has rejected the invitation, believing their input would not genuinely influence the outcome. Her rejection frames the Prime Minister’s initiative as a “constitutional gimmick” and highlights a deep-seated distrust between the two major political parties on this critical national issue.
