Trinidad and Tobago – June 26, 2024 – Trinidad and Tobago and Sri Lanka have been appointed co-champions of the Mangrove Ecosystem and Livelihood Action Group (MELAG) under the Commonwealth Blue Charter. This significant appointment underscores both nations’ commitment to marine environmental conservation.
Dr. Ava Maxam, Director of the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) and head of Trinidad and Tobago’s delegation, highlighted the country’s readiness to take on several key responsibilities. These include establishing communication channels, developing a comprehensive Concept Note, driving engagement within the Action Group, and facilitating capacity-building initiatives. This co-leadership position in MELAG signifies Trinidad and Tobago’s enhanced role in regional and international efforts to protect and restore vital mangrove ecosystems and support coastal livelihoods.
