Burris: ‘Heritage 2024 Feels Natual & Organic’

Despite criticisms about the calendar and budget, Secretary of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities, and Transportation Tashia Burris stated that she is proud of the Tobago Heritage Festival so far. She noted that it felt natural and organic and hopes that Tobagonians can continue this representation going forward.

Tourism Secretary, Tashia Burris pointed out than in the past, the Tobago Heritage Festival had a lot of glitz and glamour, which required higher budgets. When planning for the 2024 edition, the THA faced financial challenges as a result of the February 7th Gulfstream oil spill. Burris said the budget was reduced to $4.9 million, and each participating community was granted $200,000 to assist in hosting their events.
Many people were not satisfied with the $200,000 budget and it resulted in several popular events pulling out. Burris also addressed criticism for the scheduling of events. She explained that it was planned by cultural stalwarts.
Burris noted that there is significant potential to expand the 2024 productions into year-round revenue-generating opportunities for communities. She stated that the Division is willing to provide as much support as possible. The Tobago Heritage Festival 2024 concludes on Thursday with the Emancipation Day celebrations.
