Building materials have been stolen from the compound of the Tobago Hindu Mandir. The Tobago Hindu Society is currently constructing its first temple, or Mandir, on the island. While construction had been progressing smoothly, it has now come to a halt due to the theft of materials needed to complete the front of the building. According to Pulwatty Beepath, president of the Tobago Hindu Society, the project was being carried out in partnership with the THA, utilising URP workers. On Tuesday, when workers arrived at the site to continue construction, they discovered the theft. Missing items included two pallets of concrete blocks, three bales of steel, and several pieces of plywood. Tyre tracks were found in the area, suggesting the materials were taken away by truck. The materials were last seen on Friday, January 17th, after workers had covered them for safekeeping. Some of the stolen items were provided through the National Self-Help Commission Grant, while others were donated by Almandoz Hardware. The Tobago Hindu Society has expressed shock and dismay over the incident. Police are currently investigating, and the society is appealing to the public for assistance.
