Trinidad historically serves as the primary source of food for Tobago. However, the island’s ongoing seabridge challenges have led to significant shortages of certain food products. In response to this, Raul Bermudez, owner of Breadfruit Trees.com, is strongly advocating for a more strategic approach to food resource distribution. He believes that indiscriminately sharing numerous seeds without a clear objective is inefficient. Instead, Bermudez champions the distribution of high-yielding fruit and vegetable plants, particularly focusing on breadfruit trees.
Bermudez partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to cultivate these essential trees. He has successfully distributed over 8,000 breadfruit trees across Trinidad and Tobago, including a significant number planted right here in Tobago.
Raul Bermudez stated that the genuine warmth and welcoming spirit of Tobagonians consistently inspire his repeated visits to the island. Given that breadfruit holds a significant place in Tobago’s heritage and culture, his initiative extends beyond just food security. He is determined to ensure that these cherished traditions and the availability of local breadfruit can be passed down to future generations.
His work directly addresses the vulnerabilities exposed by the seabridge crisis, aiming to bolster Tobago’s food independence and celebrate a vital part of its culinary and cultural identity. The distribution of breadfruit trees is seen as a key step towards enhancing the island’s resilience in food production.
