In September 2023, Superintendent Rodhill Kirk of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) provided an update on crime in Tobago following the Independence Day festivities. He noted that the island experienced a relatively calm and peaceful period compared to the preceding week of higher criminal activity.
Superintendent Kirk highlighted that, in contrast to Trinidad, Tobago’s primary crime concerns during that period were break-ins and larceny. He specifically mentioned that only eight murders had been recorded in Tobago within a nine-month span at that time.
As of Monday, September 4, 2023, the TTPS detection rate in Tobago had reached 34%, marking a 4% increase. Looking ahead to the school reopening (in September 2023), Kirk urged all drivers to exercise extreme caution on Tobago roads, anticipating potential traffic delays. He emphasized the need for a greater level of vigilance when passing through school zones, confirming that these areas would be actively monitored by the TTPS.
Furthermore, Superintendent Kirk also issued advice to parents of children attending secondary school. He recommended ensuring that robust safety measures were in place for their children’s transportation and urged parents to familiarize themselves with the drivers providing these services.
