Criminals are attempting to capitalize on the frenzy of Christmas shoppers. However, the TTPS is urging citizens not to let their guard down. They have observed a rise in reports of ATM-related crimes. During a press conference, Senior Superintendent of Port of Spain, Harripersad Ramanarine, urged the public to be extra vigilant while visiting ATMs. “Look to see who is there, who is not there. Watch to see if it is a bank you are accustomed with, you know the people in the environment. Do not go to banks with ATMs that is a lonely place. Look for your regular banks where there is a population there is heightened so you can feel some sense of security when you use the ATM.“
He urged citizens to be aware of their surroundings while conducting their transactions. “pay attention to persons that is inside the ATM and persons outside the ATM who may want to access your pin or provide information to other persons.” Additionally, the police also reported an increase in crimes related to items listed for sale on social media.
Many Tobagonians are accustomed to traveling to Trinidad to shop before Christmas. However, Senior Superintendent Ramanarine encouraged all shoppers to take precautions while out and about, opting to visit popular and familiar places. “if you intend to do business, do with the persons you know. Do some research. Check customer’s review. This will ensure that when you spend your money, you get what you deserve and what you paid for in terms of goods and services.“
He also urged people to shop in groups instead of by themselves to reduce the chances of becoming a target for criminals.
