In what appears to be a nail-biting conclusion to the 2023 Local Government Elections with the recounting of ballots in several electoral districts, the results have yet again changed.
In a press release released late on Thursday afternoon, the Elections and Boundaries Commission stated that at the end of the final check of the results for the electoral district of Arima Northeast resulted in the PNM’s candidate Kim Magdalene Garcia gaining two additional votes.
As such this result overturns the previous one in which the UNC candidate Jairzinho Domingo Gustav Rigsby was declared the winner. The EBC further stated that the check of the final results were conducted by the Assistant Chief Election Officer Pamela Ogiste in accordance with Election Rule 106 (1).
The final results now stand at
PNM – 625
PEP – 81
UNC 624.
With the change in this result the unofficial tally of electoral districts now stand equal with the PNM at 70 seats and the UNC at 70 seats. The Election and Boundaries Commission is yet to set a date for the 141st electoral district of Hindustan/Indian Walk in the Princes Town Regional Corporation.
Additionally, the EBC is in the process of allocating the number of Aldermen per party for each of the 14 Corporations for which the Hare Method is used.
