In his Independence Day address, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine said that in the life of a human being, 61 is the age of retirement when individuals are often seeking to embark on new adventures. According to the Chief Secretary, the country has seen significant improvements over the past 61 years. He emphasized that one of the ongoing priorities for the nation is to ensure that the constitutional framework is fair and equitable, particularly to guarantee that Tobago attains the required level of autonomy.
Presiding Officer Abby Taylor expressed that celebrating independence is a means of paying tribute to all the iconic, cultural, and historical contributions that have played a role in shaping the nation. Shenoted that she can only imagine the range of emotions people experienced during the first year of freedom, with joy being one of them. However, she emphasized her desire to focus on optimism.
The Presiding Officer used the opportunity to impress upon the youth the importance of paying attention to sittings of the Assembly Legislature. Following the official ceremony, the several detachments marched along the Claude Noel Highway, along Wilson Road, and finally to Gardenside Car Park in Scarborough. Numerous bystanders lined the street to see the demonstration, decked out in the national colours of red, white and black.
