One month is how long it will take to decide if additional flights should be made available on the airbridge in time for the Tobago Carnival. This, according to Tobago West MP Shamfa Cudjoe. Tobago’s Carnival is scheduled for October 27th to the 29th. However, former Minority Leader, Ashworth Jack dismissed the Minister’s statements saying neither she, nor the Central Government has the political will to ensure visitors can get to Tobago for Carnival.
Every bandleader has indicated to Tobago Updates that without increased flights on Caribbean Airlines, Tobago’s Carnival is at risk. Tobago West MP Shamfa Cudjoe heard their complaints and tried to assist. While the Minister’s efforts are noted, the dates of this year’s Tobago Carnival have been known since October 29, 2022. Additionally, bands began launching two months ago, all pleading for more flights.
Former Minority Leader, Ashworth Jack says it does not take a month to add extra flights. Jack was responsible for convincing the then People’s Partnership government in 2012 to add additional flights on the air bridge after 12 at night. That flight was cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic and never reinstated. In fact, CAL offered twenty-four flights daily on the airbridge. Today, there are only twelve daily flights. Jack rubbished the argument that the airbridge is not making enough money to make dollars and “cents”. With the government’s slow approach to deciding whether extra flights need to be added in time for Tobago’s Carnival in October or not, Jack finds it hard to accept.
