PNM Tobago council disappointed over autonomy bill proceedings.
Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – Hopes for the advancement of the Tobago Autonomy Bill were not realized yesterday, as the legislation failed to pass the committee stage in Parliament. This crucial bill, designed to grant the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) greater jurisdiction and autonomy over the island’s affairs, faced significant hurdles.
The United National Congress (UNC) rejected the bills, citing concerns over proposed amendments. This decision has sparked criticism from various political figures.
Minority Leader Kelvon Morris expressed strong disappointment regarding the bill’s handling, particularly highlighting the missed opportunity for increased financial resources for Tobago. His sentiments were echoed by PNM Senator Laurence Hislop, who also criticized the process.
The delay means that the pursuit of greater self-governance for Tobago continues, as stakeholders work to address the contentious issues preventing its passage.
