March 26, 2025 – The CARICOM Reparations Commission joins the global community in observing the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, reflecting on the horrors of this dark chapter in history. The Day honors the millions of Africans forcibly displaced and subjected to unimaginable suffering. This observance coincides with the start of the United Nations’ Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025–2034), which aims to confront the ongoing impacts of colonization and enslavement. The Commission continues its fight for reparations, highlighting systemic inequality, racial discrimination, and intergenerational poverty. The Commission calls on the global community to recognize these legacies and commit to healing, reconciliation, and dignity for victims and their descendants, especially reparatory justice for people of African descent.
