Muslims in Tobago begin their annual period of fasting as the month of Ramadan begins

Scarborough, TobagoRamadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, marked a significant time for Muslims worldwide. This holy month involves fasting, prayer, reflection, and community, forming one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Director Kamael Ali from Masjid Al-Tawbah in Lowlands explained the profound importance of Ramadan, where Muslims observe a unique and profound fasting practice from dawn till sunset. This period of spiritual discipline fosters self-purification, empathy for the less fortunate, and a deeper connection to faith.

The month culminates in Eid al-Fitr, a joyous festive celebration anticipated for Friday, April 26th, 2024, pending the moon sighting. Joining together with family and friends, Muslims mark the end of the fasting period with prayers, sermons, communal gatherings, feasting, and acts of charity, expressing gratitude and generosity.
