Trinidad and Tobago Nationals to Obtain a Visa Before Travelling to Ireland

May 12, 2025 – In a significant policy shift, nationals of Trinidad and Tobago will need a visa to travel to Ireland. The Government of Ireland has announced that, effective today, May 12, 2025, citizens of Trinidad and Tobago must obtain a visa for both entry and transit through Ireland. This move brings Irish immigration policy in line with that of the United Kingdom. The announcement was made on May 9 by Ireland’s Department of Justice. However, emergency travel allowances will be made for those with confirmed bookings before May 12 and scheduled travel dates up to May 31, 2025. Eligible circumstances include critical medical emergencies, important family events such as weddings or funerals, admission to academic programmes, employment with valid permits, and official business travel. Travellers who qualify must email becomingvisarequired@justice.ie with supporting documents, using the subject line “Visa Required Emergency Travel Requested.” Ireland’s Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said the visa requirement is a security measure that supports legitimate travel while protecting Ireland’s borders. While Minister of State Colm Brophy added that the change aligns Ireland more closely with the UK and strengthens the Common Travel Area.
