As global attention gradually shifts from the COVID-19 pandemic, a critical public health concern remains vital: HIV and AIDS. Dr. Oscar Ocho, Director of The UWI School of Nursing, is particularly urging young people in Trinidad and Tobago to focus on this ongoing health challenge.
Dr. Ocho reminded the public of the primary modes of HIV transmission. HIV is predominantly a sexually transmitted infection, spread through anal, vaginal, and oral intercourse. Other pathways include using shared needles, injecting illegal substances, or coming into contact with contaminated blood. Importantly, HIV can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or nursing.
Based on reports available as of December 2022, Trinidad and Tobago had 8,000 documented cases of HIV/AIDS across all age groups. To halt the spread of HIV and AIDS, Dr. Ocho strongly advises against promiscuous behaviours. He underscored the critical importance of routine health examinations and HIV testing, as various factors can contribute to its transmission.
In light of the recent reopening of schools, Dr. Ocho further highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive sexual education for youth. He observed a clear lack of factual sexual health knowledge among young people, making education even more vital.
