5-0 Defeat for FC Phoenix

FC Phoenix’s debut in the Tier 1 Trinidad and Tobago Premier Football League did not go as planned as they endured a resounding 5-0 defeat against reigning champions Defence Force. The match, held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, saw Phoenix struggle to contain their opponents, who capitalized on defensive lapses and set-piece opportunities throughout the game.

From the outset, Defence Force asserted their dominance, with Nathaniel Garcia opening the scoring in just the sixth minute. Phoenix’s defensive woes continued as Brent Sam doubled the lead deep into first-half stoppage time, punishing a defensive error with a powerful strike from close range.

Despite brief glimpses of offensive initiative early in the second half, Phoenix failed to convert their chances, while Defence Force remained clinical. A header from a corner kick in the 55th minute extended the lead, followed by a missed penalty save by Phoenix goalkeeper Duvaughn Daniel in the 66th minute. Defence Force capitalized on another set piece moments later, securing their fourth goal of the night through a well-executed header.

The match concluded with substitute Lashawn Roberts adding a fifth goal in the dying moments of the game, sealing a comprehensive victory for the defending champions.

Looking ahead, FC Phoenix will seek redemption in their upcoming match against Athletic Club Port of Spain, scheduled to be played at the Dwight Yorke Stadium this Friday. The team, coached by Nigel Souza, will aim to regroup and showcase their potential on home turf following this challenging season opener.
