UTT Expands Agricultural Training In Tobago Amid National Push For Food Security

October 15, 2025- Trinidad and Tobago’s drive toward food security is gaining momentum — and Tobago is set to play a central role.

With the nation’s annual food import bill soaring to an alarming TT$7.3 billion in 2023, the pressure on foreign exchange has intensified, underscoring the urgent need to boost local production. The situation reflects a wider regional crisis, with more than half of the English-speaking Caribbean estimated to be facing some level of food insecurity.

In response, the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), through its Eastern Caribbean Institute of Agriculture and Forestry (ECIAF), is expanding its agricultural training programmes on the island. The initiative aims to equip Tobago’s youth with the skills and technology needed to modernize local agriculture and strengthen the island’s food production capacity.

UTT officials say the expanded training will focus on innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship — creating a new generation of agri-professionals ready to transform Tobago’s agricultural landscape.
