T&t’s Democratic Pattern of Decay, Says Dennis

January 27, 2026 — A sobering assessment of the global and local political landscape is making waves on social media today. Ancil Dennis, Political Leader of the People’s National Movement (PNM) Tobago Council, has taken to Facebook to warn that democracy is currently facing a “pattern of decay,” where confrontational styles are increasingly being rewarded over principled leadership.

In a lengthy post that has sparked significant debate, Dennis argued that the current political climate, both in Trinidad and Tobago and abroad, is shifting toward a dangerous populism. He suggested that “shouting the loudest” and engaging in “political theater” have become the new benchmarks for success, often at the expense of sound policy and institutional integrity.

Key highlights from Dennis’s assessment include:

  • Erosion of Standards: A concern that the basic tenets of democratic engagement are being replaced by “might is right” tactics.
  • The Reward of Aggression: Observation that voters and social media algorithms are increasingly favoring politicians who prioritize conflict over collaboration.
  • A Call for Principled Leadership: Dennis urged citizens to look beyond the “noise” and demand a return to governance based on transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

The former Chief Secretary’s comments come at a time when Tobago’s political landscape is adjusting to a 15-0 legislative reality, leading to concerns about the lack of a formal opposition voice in the Assembly. Dennis posited that without strong, principled dissent, the “pattern of decay” could accelerate, leaving the democratic process vulnerable.
