Boat Engine Theft at Culloden Bay

Fishermen at Culloden Bay are once again grappling with stolen boat engines and equipment, an issue that’s regrettably becoming a recurring problem. Sheldon Cooper, President of the Golden Lane Fisher Folk Association, recently spoke out about the latest incident, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by his members.

Cooper attributes the continuous theft of fishing equipment to the lack of adequate facilities at Culloden Bay. The Culloden Bay fishing facility has been in disrepair for several years, despite the fishermen’s own efforts to maintain it. The Association has repeatedly sent letters to the Department of Fisheries in an attempt to resolve these pressing issues.

Responding to these concerns, Natisha Charles-Pantin, Secretary of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment, and Sustainable Development, acknowledged that the problems at Culloden are not isolated. She noted that most fishing facilities around Tobago are in disrepair, largely due to funding challenges that prevent simultaneous comprehensive repairs. However, minor repairs are being attempted across the island. The Secretary also stated that there are plans to address the Culloden Fishing Facility specifically in the next fiscal year, potentially utilizing URP workers.
