News emerged two weeks ago that in April a funding cut from the Environment Management Agency was jeopardizing the future operations of the Tobago Recycling Resource Initiative, leaving many environmentally-focused individuals in shock. However, following the public disclosure of the issue, TRRI Director Shawn Roberts has announced that operations resumed successfully on Monday.
The resumption is timely because, as Christmas Day draws closer, recycling is piling up. Roberts said that while most operations were shut down over the last couple of weeks, they were still storing recyclables at Studley Park.
They already shipped out bales of cardboard and other recyclables on Monday and are hoping to send out more in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Roberts encouraged Tobagonians to collect their recyclables as they conduct their annual Christmas cleaning of their homes.
Recycling is not just important because it helps to keep bottles off the streets and improves the appearance of communities, but it is also crucial for the environment.
