The Tobago carnival season kicked off with exhilaration as Metro Stars, Tobago’s sole representative in the Panorama steel pan competition, secured an impressive 8th place in the Single Band category during the semi-finals this past weekend. Brian Thomas, Chairman of Pan Trinbago’s Tobago Region, lauded the band’s performance, marking a significant achievement for the local music scene.
“Metro Stars did exceptionally well on Saturday night,” Thomas remarked. “They entered the semi-finals ranked 22nd and climbed to 8th place. They are poised well for the finals and we hope they can clinch that top position.”
The Panorama semi-finals, a highlight of Tobago’s cultural calendar, drew enthusiastic crowds to witness the musical prowess of bands competing across various categories. Thomas also announced upcoming competitions for small bands scheduled for December 7th and 8th, featuring eight Tobago bands, including reigning National champions, Uptown Fascinators.
“We can’t do it without your support,” Thomas emphasized, urging the community to come out and rally behind the bands. He highlighted the positive impact of pan music on youth engagement and crime prevention, noting its role in providing constructive activities for children and young people.
“We have children off the streets, keeping active and engaged for a six-month period,” Thomas explained. “This helps reduce crime as they spend their time focused on music and community.”
Thomas called upon the Ministry of National Security to invest further in the pan sector, recognizing its potential to uplift communities and nurture musical talent. As Tobago leads in Panorama judging, the island continues to be a beacon for cultural enrichment and unity through music.
