August 26, 2025 Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles-Robinson has warned Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar against interfering with First Citizens Bank (FCB), emphasizing the importance of allowing the financial institution to operate independently and free from political influence.
Beckles-Robinson cautioned that involving FCB in partisan disputes risks damaging public trust in one of Trinidad and Tobago’s key financial pillars. She highlighted the bank’s vital role in sustaining financial stability and supporting the nation’s economic growth.
“First Citizens Bank must not be used as a political football,” Beckles-Robinson said, urging that the country’s national interest take precedence over party politics.
The Opposition Leader called on all stakeholders to prioritize the stability and credibility of financial institutions to safeguard the broader economy.
