C.S. Farley Augustine says government is yet to speak to him about US$250,000 CAF Donation for oil spill clean-up

Chief Secretary Farley Augustine says the government has yet to speak to him about a US$250,000 donation for the Gulfstream oil spill cleanup.

The Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) made the announcement earlier in the week. When questioned at a press conference earlier this afternoon, Augustine claimed he found out about the donation through reports in the media.

He suspects that some of the money will be directed to companies assisting with cleanup efforts under the central government’s instructions. Meanwhile, cleanup continues along the coastline. Augustine noted that they are encountering challenges in the Lambeau area.

Tobago has been dealing with a Tier 3 oil spill disaster following the discovery of the Gulfstream vessel capsized on a reef near Cove, polluting 15 km of coastline between Scarborough and Canoe Bay. Authorities are still trying to determine the ownership of the vessel and its tug “Solo Creed” believed to be traveling from Panama to Guyana.
