Mass Grave Investigation, 56 Unclaimed Bodies Recovered…
A high-level national security and forensic investigation has been launched by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) following the discovery of 56 human bodies improperly buried in an unauthorized mass grave at the Cumuto Public Cemetery.
The handling and interment of human remains in Trinidad and Tobago is strictly governed by statutory frameworks, including the Burial Grounds Act (Chap. 30:51) and the Cremation Act (Chap. 30:52). Under national law, the disposal of cadavers requires formal death registration, burial permits issued by a District Medical Officer (DMO) or Registrar, and strict sanitary procedures executed within licensed municipal or public burial grounds. Any unauthorized mass disposal, dumping, or procedural circumvention constitutes a serious criminal violation.
