The Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) is urging Trinidad and Tobago’s President, Christine Kangaloo, to reconsider not renewing the contract of Industrial Court President Deborah Thomas-Felix, set to expire soon. In a letter, JTUM president Ancel Roget criticized the decision, deeming it irregular and disrespectful. He emphasized Thomas-Felix’s international recognition and expressed concern about potential bias in judgments and a negative impact on industrial relations. The union called for transparency and questioned whether Chief Justice Ivor Archie provided advice. Additionally, there are speculations about the decision’s connection to upcoming cases.
The Oilfield Workers Trade Union sees Thomas-Felix’s removal as a disservice to women.
Meanwhile, Heather Seales was appointed as the President of the Industrial Court today, according to a press release from the President of Trinidad and Tobago. The president’s office expressed gratitude to former Industrial Court president Deborah Thomas-Felix for her over 11 years of service.
They acknowledged her leadership as instrumental in enhancing the court’s capacity and establishing a talented pool of members, facilitating the selection of a new president.
