Guyana’s Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has no details on vessels bringing in crude oil to its territory
February 15, 2024 – Following the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival season, Senior Superintendent Rodhill Kirk of the Tobago branch of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service had reported a notably safe national carnival for Tobago. However, attention has now turned to a critical international incident, with Guyana’s Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo refraining from confirming if a crude oil-filled tanker was heading to Guyana.
At a recent press conference in Guyana, Jagdeo faced inquiries from local reporters. These questions arose after revelations from Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of National Security about a tugboat named “Solo Creed” towing a barge carrying crude oil from Panama to Guyana. The tugboat reportedly disappeared eleven days prior, while the barge capsized near Tobago on February 7th, 2024, causing a significant oil spill into the sea and resulting in an ecological crisis for the island.
Vice President Jagdeo’s lack of immediate details regarding the vessel underscores the complexities of international maritime incidents and the challenges in tracing ownership and cargo details, especially as the Tobago oil spill investigation continues.
