May 21, 2025 – Despite the Dragon Gas deal’s risk, discussions about regional energy cooperation intensified, as a debate has emerged over a proposed gas pipeline from Suriname to Trinidad and Tobago. Former Energy Minister Stuart Young has opposed current Minister Dr. Roodal Moonilal’s assertion that a pipeline could bypass Venezuelan waters. Young argued that previous feasibility studies revealed such a route would be uneconomical due to high costs and insufficient gas reserves in Suriname. He warned that promoting unrealistic projects could deter foreign investment and mislead citizens, stressing that accurate communication is vital to maintaining investor confidence in the energy sector.
