Having satisfied the court following an injunction filed by the Environment Management Authority, Secretary of Infrastructure, Quarries, and Urban Development, Trevor James, claimed it is full speed ahead for the Friendship Connector Road.
The road aims to connect Shirvan Junction with Store Bay Local Road in an effort to provide a more direct route to the new airport terminal, still under construction. It will also offer an alternative route for motorists, easing traffic congestion in South West Tobago. However, the convenience for drivers might come at a price for historical relics in the area. Despite this concern, James insists that nothing of historical value is being touched. “and we have not taken and will not take any action to destroy what we believe to be heritage sites around the island. Our intent is to develop them and preserve them. 1:40:03 On this estate there are a couple sites that we will preserve“.
There are also farmers and a horse stable occupying the area, but James stated that they are squatters because the land belongs to the state. Despite his firm view about the squatters, James assures that careful steps are being taken to remove them from the state lands. The 2.5-kilometer single-lane carriageway is being constructed by California Stucco Company Limited at a cost of $70 million.
