AG praises court victory on COP extension

Attorney General praises court victory on police commissioner extension, confirms cabinet acted in national interest and law.

Attorney General Reginald Armour praised the State’s victory in defending the one-year extension of Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher’s service. In a press release, he highlighted that this exemplifies the Cabinet’s commitment to the national interest. The Privy Council ruled on December 19th that the extension, beyond her retirement age, was lawful and constitutional, dismissing a challenge from activist Ravi Balgobin-Maharaj. Armour stated that the State’s success throughout the legal process shows that the Cabinet acted within the law and in the national interest. He also reassured that the Police Service Commission’s jurisdiction over the Commissioner remains intact and will continue to be respected.
