Gender and Child Affairs Division Launches Umbono System for GBV
January 9, 2025 – On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, the Gender and Child Affairs Division officially launched the Central Registry on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), known as the Umbono System. This innovative web-based platform was developed in-house by the Information Communications and Technology Department within the Office of the Prime Minister, with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The Umbono System is designed to capture real-time data on incidents and activities related to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Trinidad and Tobago. It aims to:
Analyze trends and determine the frequency and incidence of domestic violence (DV).
Identify at-risk groups and work toward reducing the prevalence of domestic violence (DV).
Develop targeted intervention programs.
Monitor the effectiveness of violence prevention and intervention efforts.
Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister for Gender and Child Affairs, Ayanna Webster-Roy, highlighted the system’s role in reducing re-traumatization for victims, as it allows various organizations to use the same system, reducing the need for victims to repeatedly tell their story. This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing gender-based violence in the country by providing data-driven insights to guide policies and programmes aimed at reducing domestic violence and supporting victims.
