August 14, 2025 – For more than two decades, thousands of former employees of the defunct Caroni (1975) Limited have waited for the government to make good on a promise of land. Yesterday, for 193 of those families, that wait finally came to an end. In a ceremony at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA), the new administration, led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, distributed land leases for two-acre agricultural plots and residential lots. Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, a granddaughter of a former Caroni worker, framed the distribution as both a symbolic and tangible act of justice and a fulfillment of a long-standing promise.
